A Man Who Is Burning With Passion in the Library

Nowadays, we can't live without computers because all new information is being created or digitalized by computers and is spread all over the world through the Internet. Without computers, we couldn't deal with all this information efficiently. It is important for people to adapt themselves to a speedy information-oriented society. In this sense, Dongguk University (DU) has a special man, Lee Dong-kyu, who is doing his best to  digitalize the DU Central Library. Mr. Lee majored Library and Information Science at Sungkyunkwan University. After graduation, he started to work in the DU Central Library 1984. At frist, he worked in the Periodicals Room of the library. Mr. Lee didn't have any knowledge about computer at that time. If so, how has he helped computerize the library?"The Central Library made a precise plan to digitalize the library in 1992. I took charge of achieving the task as its director. Although it was very difficult for me because I was not good at computers, I had to put the plan into action. So, I worked by day and studied by night to accomplish the digitalization of the library since 1992," Mr. Lee said.In 1996, Local Area Network (LAN) was installed on campus, and he went to work in earnest. Thanks to his efforts, almost all information about books and many kinds of Buddhist materials owned by the Central Library were fed into computers. His successful computerization of the library purportedly set an example for other university libraries."It is said that my work was almost finished. But it's not true. A library is just like a "growing organism." Mountains of work are waiting for me," he said.Mr. Lee was burning with passion during my interview. His passion and love toward the library motivates him to make the DU Central Library the best digitalized library.
