The Current Relationship of the Two Koreas and the Prospect of Unification
Two members of the National Assembly were invited for a special lecture, "The Current Relationship of the Two Koreas and the Prospect of Unification," in the 3rd Seminar Room of the Academic Cultural Center on Oct. 25. The lecturers were Kim Geun-tae, a member of the Supreme Council of the ruling Millennium Democratic Party, and Lee Bu-yong, a deputy president of the Grand National Party.The lecture started with an introductory address by DU president Song Suk-gu. Rep. Kim said that unification will be easy once peace is guaranteed on the Korean Peninsula. "Thus, we need to make plans and strategies for establishing the peace," he said.Rep. Lee said, "Because terror by Middle Eastern countries, the Bush administration regarded North Korea as a dangerous country, which will have bad effects on unifying our divided country." He concluded that the ruling and opposition parties have to cooperate with one mind on this issue. "It is important to create harmony between the parties so that we can achieve a bipartisan agreement on unification policies," he added.After the lecture, Rep. Kim asked university students to have passion and great dreams. A participant gave his impression of the lecture: "This lecture was very informative because it was given by active politicians."The Research Academy of Social Science and the Dept. of Political Science & Diplomacy held the lecture through the support of the Institute of World Political Economy.
